왜 한국 사람은 똑똑한가?(Why are Koreans so smart?)

주: 이 주제는 나의 오랜 개인적 연구의 결과이다.

약 20년 전 미국 캘리포니아에서 멕시코인 인부를 조수로 데리고 일을 하면서 멕시코 사람은 분명히 우리보다 덜 똑똑하다는 사실을 느끼게 되고 상대적으로 한국사람은 대단히 똑똑하다는 것을 알게되었다.

이 글은 학술적인 연구의 결과는 아니고 내 개인적인 의견을 정리한 것에 불과하다.

이 글을 읽는 분께서 내가 열거한 이유 이외에 가능성이 있는 이유를 제시해 주시면 글의 내용에 반영하겠다.

한국사람이 똑똑한 것과 한글에 연관성이 있다는 Western Confucian 이라는 사이트가 있어 소개한다.

IQ Research 라는 사이트에 따르면 한국(남한)의 평균 IQ는 전세계를 통틀어 1위인 홍콩(106)과 싱가폴(106) 다음으로 1점 낮은 105로 세계 2위의 IQ 최상위 국가로 분류되고 있다.

"왜 한국 사람은 이렇게 똑똑한가" 라는 질문에 대한 대답으로 나는 아래 4가지 이유를 찾았다.

1.     젓가락:

젓가락은 한국을 비롯하여 중국, 일본 및 베트남 같은 나라에서 주요한 식사 도구로서 사용되고 있다. 그 중에서 한국인의 젓가락 사용은 중국이나 일본과 달리 콩 하나를 집을 수 있을 정도로 매우 섬세하다. 젓가락 두 개를 주먹 쥐듯이 움켜쥐고 밥공기를 한 손으로 들고 다른 손에 든 젓가락으로 밥을 긁어 입으로 밀어 넣는 일본식 젓가락 질은 그리 섬세하지 못하고 중국 또한 젓가락의 길이가 한국보다는 상당히 긴 것을 사용하기 때문에 그리 섬세할 수가 없다.

Truetalent.in라는 사이트에 따르면 손가락의 운동은 뇌의 발달과 밀접한 관계가 있다고 한다. 아마도 한국인의 우수한 두뇌는 이 젓가락의 섬세한 사용으로 어릴 적부터 개발되었다고 생각된다.

이러한 섬세한 젓가락 조종 기술이 바탕이 되었는지 한국의 의사들은 “다빈치(Da Vinci)” 라는 수술용 로봇을 개발한 미국의 의사 보다 더 로봇을 잘 조종한다고 한다.

얼마 전 각광을 받은 현미경 아래에서의 미세 조작에 의한 수정란 기술 또한 한국 사람의 섬세한 젓가락 조종 기술이 토대가 된 예는 많다.

지금은 조금 시들해 졌지만 한국은 국제적으로 기능인들의 기량을 겨누는 기능올림픽에서 수년간 연속 우승을 한 적도 있다. 한국 사람은 특히 손재봉, 이발/미용, 벽돌 쌓기 같은 손으로 하는 일은 세계의 어떤 나라 사람보다도 기량이 뛰어나다. 이런 한국인의 뛰어난 손 기능과 함께 우수한 두뇌는 한국인의 섬세한 젓가락 사용과 관계가 있다고 나는 믿고 있다.

2.     한글과 문자 생활

한국은 세종대왕이 창제한 세계 최고(The world’s most incredible Alphabet, 참고사이트, Asia Society 운영)의 표음문자인 한글과 중국에서 유래한 표의문자인 한자를 같이 쓰고 있으며 한국말 단어의 약 절반 이상은 한자어에서 유래한 것이다. 이렇게 표음문자와 표의문자를 같이 쓰는 말하자면 하이브리드 문자 체계를 가진 나라는 전 세계에서 한국과 일본 두 나라뿐이다. 과학적인 한글의 사용과 더불어 표의문자를 동시에 사용하는 것에 기인한 문자적, 언어적 다양성은 지능의 발달에 영향을 미친다고 말 할 수 있으며 일본인이 지능지수 1이 모자란 105로 한국인 다음의 3위를 차지한다는 것은 이를 증명한다.

3.     반도국과 전쟁

한반도에 사는 한민족이 단일 민족 인 것은 확실하나 반도국의 특징으로 역사적으로 외세의 침입이 많았다. 중국은 물론이고 몽고족, 만주족, 일본의 왜구까지 침입하여 전쟁을 벌였다.

전쟁의 제일 큰 피해자는 여성들이다. 남성만으로 구성된 고대의 군인 집단의 강간 대상이었다. 이러한 강간은 생리적으로 임신도 잘(근거, 위키피디아) 된다. 이러한 전쟁으로 한민족은 적절한(?) 이 민족과의 혼혈이 이루어져 인종적인 우수성을 갖게 되었다고 생각한다.

4.     근친혼의 금기 시

동물의 근친 교배 또는 가까운 일족간의 결혼이 유전적으로 상당한 문제를 일으킨다는 것은 이미 알려진 사실이다. 일본의 경우는 오누이 간에도 결혼이 가능한 정도이고 아랍계 나라의 경우 사촌간의 결혼은 거의 당연시 되고 있으며 심지어 “종의 기원(On the Origin of Species)” 으로 유명한 찰스 다윈도 사촌과 결혼 했다고 한다. 사촌간의 결혼을 법으로 금지한 나라는 한국과 북한을 포함하여 중국, 베트남 및 미국의 절반(주에 따라 다르다) 정도이며 세계적으로 볼 때 결혼의 약 10% 정도는 사촌간의 결혼(출처, 위키피디아) 이라고 한다.

그러나 법 이전에 한민족은 관습적으로 근친 결혼을 예부터 엄격히 금지하였다. 사돈의 팔촌이라도 먼 친척이 된다고 하여 절대 결혼을 할 수 없었다.

이런 한국 사회에서는 아무리 먼 친척이라 하드라도 동성동본 간의 결혼이 법으로 금지되어 있으니 더 말해 무엇 하겠는가?

이민족과의 혼혈에 더하여 근친혼까지 금기 시 되는 한국사람이 인종적으로 우수할 수 밖에 없는 것은 너무도 당연한 결과이다.

If you do Google search, you could find several articles related with this subject but all were written by foreigners and the reasons what they mentioned are some reasonable and some out of focus, I guess. In most cases they have no deep investigation of Korean society throughout the history.

I am not an anthropologist nor a geneticist but just a Korean, simple electric engineer but it's clear "Koreans are so smart" and this article is just written as my personal concern, limited with my own knowledge.

I would like to illustrate some key factors, could be the reasons of "the smartness of Koreans" as follows,

1.      Chop Sticks

The chop sticks are very important tools for dinning in Korea including China, Japan and other South-East Asian countries but the way of using of the chop sticks in Korea is the finest movement among the countries and they could pick even a small bean with chop sticks which is made with steel(usually stainless steel) - very slippery compare with other materials, bamboo or wood for other countries.
In Korea, usually children with their age in 5~6 years old, they start to learn the chop sticks driving and their skills are very poor in the beginning but gradually improving with years and finally they get the highest level of chop sticks driving when they are in middle school, 14~15 years old.

As I know, the movement of fingers are directly related with brain development and their chop sticks operation could accelerate their smartness.

Beside of it, Koreans are showing high skills in the field of hand operated, such as hair styling, hand sewing, brick works, robotics surgery and even women's golf.

I believe the Koreans hand skills and smartness are oriented from their daily using of chop sticks.

2.      Hangul and Chinese Hanja

On the year 1443, the Great King Sejong had invented a brand new phonetic letter system, named Hangul, the world’s best alphabet for the general people who couldn’t learn the complected Chinese letters what they had chartered.
Beside of the Korean's using of the scientific letter system, Hangul, Koreans are still using the Chinese letters(nowadays the using of letter itself is reduced so much) which is oriented 50% or more Korean words.
So to speak, the Koreans are using a hybrid letter system, the phonetic Hangul and symbolic Chinese letters.
I would say the Korean's hybrid letter system made diversity of lingual life and it could accelerate their smartness.
There are just two countries in worldwide where using the hybrid letter system, Korea and Japan and it could be a proving that the IQ of Japanese is just after Korean, 3rd with 104 points. 

3.      The Peninsular

The Korea is a peninsular, as a part of South-East Asian Continent and related with it’s geographical location, there were several other people’s invading, Chinese, Mongolian, Manchu and Japan.

The first war victim is women and during the war a lot of Korean women were raped by the other tribes which eventually made blood mixtures.

There found the genetically diversity could make smarter and taller.

4.      Cousin Marriage

In the other side of the genetically diversity, in Korean society cousin marriage is traditionally considered a taboo and they never marry between same family names(and same ancestor) even far-far away of relationship. I think this kind of Koreans customs could accelerate the genetically diversity and made the Koreans smarter.
